5 Things you need to start your own business

You’re unfulfilled in your current job

If you’re not excited to wake up and go to work in the morning, there’s definitely something better out there for you. Our work is meant to energize & fuel us, to provide meaning & create impact, to bring joy on a regular basis. Unfortunately, 80% of people are unhappy in their jobs, so it’s unlikely that you’re hearing this narrative in your current circles.

When I was stuck in my corporate job, it was normal to spend 40-60 hours a week showing up to a job that sucked the life out of me. After all, most of my friends and family were doing the same thing.

Only when I started surrounding myself with women that were making big money doing work that they were wildly passionate about, did I realize that it was possible to have both: fulfilling work AND financial abundance.

Day by day I started shifting my own personal narrative – moving away from the belief that work is a grind and that’s just the way life is, and replacing it with the belief that I could make money doing what I loved.

Now I spend my days working with amazing entrepreneurs, supporting them with getting their businesses off the ground and scaling to multiple 6 figures and beyond, and working 15-20 hours a week from anywhere in the world. I always thought I’d like to start my own business “some day”, and now that I’m living the dream, I wish I had had the courage to make that decision sooner.

If you have something else you’d rather be doing than sitting in your 9 to 5, it’s time to create a business that fulfills you.

If you have no idea what kind of business you’d want to start, let me help you pinpoint your purpose & figure out what direction to go in.

You have a passion (or multiple passions!) that isn’t a part of your job

What do you spend your free time on? What do you love learning about? What kinds of books are you reading / courses are you taking / workshops you’re attending? What kinds of conversations do you get excited about having?

If you’re passionate about something that isn’t a part of your current job, there’s no reason that you can’t start a side hustle around it, or turn it into a full time business. I’ve helped insurance agents become mindset coaches, healthcare managers become microbrewery owners, CEOs become real estate investors. If you have multiple passions but your career is based around one (or maybe not even something you’re passionate about!) you will not feel fulfilled.

Time and time again people dismiss passionate work in favor of mediocre jobs that drain their energy – don’t make that mistake.

And, to be frank, there isn’t usually one thing that we are so freaking passionate about we can’t help but build a business around it. Your passions are usually just vague curiosities until you develop them into passions over time. If you don’t feel like you have anything you’re excited to build a business around, you likely just haven’t done the work to uncover what that might be.

Pay attention to what you enjoy learning about and get curious about how you can incorporate your various vague interests into a job that is more exciting and fun than the one you’re in now.

You’re ambitious, independent, and organized

Are you always getting positive feedback in your job? Have you always done well in school? Do you love learning? Do you use your planner diligently? Do you have big dreams for yourself for the next 5-10 years?

If you’re ambitious, independent, and organized, you’re going to do really well as an entrepreneur. No, these are not prerequisites, and there are plenty of entrepreneurs who succeed even though they wouldn’t be caught dead with a planner, but if you’re already taking responsibility for your job and your life, you’re going to thrive working for yourself!

When I was in my corporate job, I often felt like I cared more and worked harder than anyone else, but it left me frustrated because my ambition and determination wasn’t matched. When I started my own business, I could finally unleash all of that ambition and use it to move my dreams forward, which was incredibly fulfilling.

If you’re driven, determined, and on top of things, you can definitely handle running your own business!

You’re terrified at the idea of running your own business

Making the decision to dive into entrepreneurship is always scary. You might mistake entrepreneurs for people that have always felt confident that they could succeed, and to whom the decision to start their own business came easily – but that’s not usually the case.

The truth is, we’re all a little nervous when it comes to putting our dream on the line. So if you’re avoiding thinking about entrepreneurship because it seems way scarier than your “stable” 9 to 5, or you keep telling yourself “yes, I’d like to, when _____ (the kids are older, or I have more time, or work is less busy, or I have more experience, or I have more money, or [insert any excuse for procrastinating here])” then you know starting your own business is exactly what you need to do next.

The mistake we make that costs us tremendous personal and professional growth, is using fear as a sign that we’re on the wrong track and assuming confidence or certainty are prerequisites for taking action.

Your fear is a guidepost not a red flag.

If you’re feeling anything from mild discomfort to full on terror at starting your own business, it’s definitely a sign that that’s what you need to do next.

You value freedom

The biggest thing entrepreneurship has allowed me to do is live my life the way I want to. This means I can take my 4 year old daughter to the beach on a Tuesday morning, and spend every afternoon after school with my 7 year old son, because I set my own schedule. This means I can work from my patio, from a coffee shop, from the top of a hill overlooking a lake, because I get to choose where I work. This means that I can build a skoolie and travel across Canada for 6 months because I work for myself.

Little things and big things that weren’t possible when I worked a 9 to 5 were suddenly my new normal.

If you value freedom, and you would enjoy doing what you want, where you want, when you want, entrepreneurship is one of the best ways to create that for yourself.

Starting a business is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life (and one of the scariest!) Coming from a family of 9 to 5ers and not knowing a single entrepreneur in my “real life” made starting my business feel like a crazy idea and the journey was full of ups and downs. When I found a community of entrepreneurs through a group coaching program I invested in, everything changed.

Now my dream didn’t seem so crazy because everyone I knew was launching an online business and I was surrounded by inspiring women that were on a similar journey to me, that helped me celebrate my wins, work through my struggles, and achieve my goals.
